Arrangements for the care of children can be a source of great anguish in the breakdown of a relationship. Parents need to work out satisfactory arrangements for the care of their children and most parents are able to do this; particularly if they obtain the assistance of helpful legal practitioners and wise counsellors.
However if there are issues and disputes between the parents, it is most important the parents understand their rights and obligations under the Family Law Act and the pathway the courts will follow in determining any disputes about the children. The courts will support the children having a meaningful relationship with both parents and others, but always subject to protecting children from violence and abuse and always being guided by the principle that the children’s own best interests are the paramount consideration.
